ASEAN consulting benefits

Why work with us

A different kind of consulting practice

Most ASEAN consulting is broad and strategic. We work in a narrower place: the cultural preparation that shapes whether relationships actually hold — and we deliver it in writing, to a defined scope, at a price that does not require a large project budget.

Our advantages

Six things that distinguish the work

Written counsel, not presentations

A grove note or review can be read carefully, shared with colleagues, and returned to when the situation it addresses recurs. A presentation does not offer this.

One country, properly addressed

We address the specific country your firm is engaging with — Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, or Singapore. Regional generalisations are not our output.

Senior advisers, not junior analysts

Every engagement is led and delivered by the same senior advisers from first conversation to final note. Work is not delegated down after the first meeting.

Fixed fees, no surprises

RM 920, RM 2,200, or RM 3,000 — depending on the engagement. Agreed at the start. No variable fees, no scope creep at extra cost, no success-based structure.

Both sides of the relationship

For the Counterpart Relationship Review, where both parties are willing, we listen on both sides before writing. The output reflects the relationship as it is actually held — not only as one party perceives it.

Confidentiality built in

Commercial and relationship details shared with us are covered by a confidentiality provision in every engagement agreement — standard, not optional, not on request.

In more detail

Each advantage, explained

Depth in ASEAN business practice

Our senior advisers have spent their working careers in or adjacent to ASEAN commerce — not as academics, but as practitioners who have sat in business meetings, navigated difficult relationship moments, and worked with counterparts across the five countries we cover. This depth is what makes the written notes specific and useful, rather than carefully hedged and general.

  • Combined seventeen-plus years of ASEAN commercial relationship experience
  • Country-level depth in Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore
  • Grounded in manufacturing, trading, distribution, and professional services

Engagements with defined scope and timelines

We work to fixed timelines — eight weeks for a Counterpart Relationship Review, ten for a Cross-Cultural Engagement, two weeks for a Grove Note. Scope is agreed at the start. If your situation changes and additional work is needed, that is a separate conversation — not an automatic extension. Senior executives appreciate clarity about what they are buying and when they will receive it.

  • Scope agreed in writing before work begins
  • Timelines respected — two, eight, or ten weeks as applicable
  • No open-ended retainer or rolling engagement model

Working sessions as conversations

The working sessions included in the longer engagements are structured as genuine exchanges, not as presentations of findings. We bring what we are learning; you bring what you are observing from within the relationship. The notes we produce are better for the combination. Most of the firms we work with find that these sessions are where questions they had not quite formulated become clear.

  • Three or four sessions depending on engagement type
  • Conversation-led, not presentation-led
  • Senior team participation, not junior attendance

Fees sized for operating businesses

Cross-cultural advisory work from regional consultancies typically comes with fees that suit large corporations. Our engagements are designed for the managing director of a mid-sized Malaysian firm who has a real question about a real relationship and needs a considered answer — not a RM 40,000 strategic review. A Grove Note at RM 920 or a full engagement at RM 3,000 represents a deliberate choice to be accessible to the firms that need this work most.

  • Grove Note: RM 920 — most questions answered at this level
  • Relationship Review: RM 2,200 — for existing partnerships
  • Cultural Engagement: RM 3,000 — for entering a new country

What clients take away

The direct outcome of working with us is a written document — a grove note or review that addresses the specific situation you brought. But the longer-term outcome is less tangible and more significant: a senior team that carries themselves differently in a cross-border relationship. More attentive to what is being signalled. More considered in how they respond. Less likely to mistake cultural difference for commercial indifference.

  • Written note or review retained and referred to over time
  • Senior team with improved cultural literacy for a specific counterpart
  • Reduced friction in early relationship stages and critical moments

What sets us apart

Three things only Onyrra Group offers

The Grove Note format

A fifteen-hundred-word written response to a single cross-cultural question — delivered in two weeks, with a follow-up call. There is no equivalent from other advisers in Malaysia at this price and turnaround.

Dual-side relationship listening

For relationship reviews, we speak with your ASEAN counterpart where they are willing. The review that follows reflects both parties' understanding of the relationship — not a single firm's point of view.

Malaysia-first perspective

Our advice is written from a Malaysian business perspective — not from a Western, Singaporean, or academic one. The questions we address are the ones Malaysian managing directors actually face when they work across ASEAN borders.
